You may ignore Omarchy but not its impact

00:00:00: Last week with quite a bit of hype, Omachi version four.

00:00:03: Omachi Quattro launched and in case you missed it It's a Linux distribution created by DHH who off course is Definitely A controversial figure.

00:00:14: too many now.

00:00:15: I haven't used omachi.

00:00:16: this Is not an omachi review or hype video.

00:00:20: i instead have thoughts about the direction we're heading to when it comes to software development and how we use computers.

00:00:28: And something I find super, super exciting about Omachi even though i haven't used that yet!

00:00:33: Now of course its also worth noting...that besides all the hype..we have kind-of the opposite reaction.

00:00:40: We've got some Linux diehards who rather keep the ecosystem locked down.

00:00:47: Don't seem to believe that Linux should be for everyone, you have criticize about omachi, parts that may feel vibe coded or maybe it's essentially DHH flavor of linux which is marketed as that.

00:01:16: Omachi the name comes from omakase where chef chooses what you eat and its same here for operating system.

00:01:26: have controversies about all of that, you can criticize and again I haven't used it yet.

00:01:31: But two important thoughts here.

00:01:33: for one i think its just great if linux gets more approachable and usable AND more importantly im convinced the philosophy of omachi quattro specifically which is that its mullible of the operating system easily with help from AI that this is a way to go.

00:02:01: Because, that's frankly what you see in other parts of software development too!

00:02:07: I mean take something like the Pi coding agent on which i have course by the.

00:02:14: The idea behind this agent is that you can make it yours.

00:02:20: That has a rich extensions system, again about which I talk in my course Which allows to add any feature you want Adjust the UI and really makes your coding agent or AI agent general And I'm convinced we'll see much more of that in all areas.

00:02:39: In all kinds of software, we interact with.

00:02:43: on the operating system is a perfect example for where you would want something like this...in my opinion!

00:02:51: Now it's also the perfect example when you can mess up a lot.

00:02:55: obviously if i mess up Pi and re-install it or just drop all extensions and im good to go If I mess up my operating system, that may be a bit harder.

00:03:08: But again of course you can if you embrace something like such plug-in systems probably end in the world where even when you do mess it up just drop your plug and you're good to go!

00:03:24: operating systems or in general software that are more snapshot based, and have mechanisms to go back earlier states if you break something.

00:03:43: Because obviously Especially right now, this is not for everyone.

00:03:47: This is niche nerd stuff.

00:03:49: I'm totally aware of that but being able to quickly add a certain feature To a piece of software or an operating system It's just an amazing thought.

00:03:59: and of course i can Vibe code some Software And used it on my Mac Or On My Windows Machine too?

00:04:05: And just to be very clear about that too, vibe coding can be perfect for that but depending on the complexity of what you want there also are limits right now and it's easy to vibe code something that is then impossible to maintain.

00:04:22: But they're all many one-off tools or basic tools where you get great results without ever looking at any code or thinking about the code architecture.

00:04:35: There basically exist both things right now.

00:04:37: And I think having an operating system that has this philosophy of extending it, being dynamic and being malleable built in just as tools like PiHabit is very much the future at least in the niche nerd world for now, but maybe also in a broader world.

00:04:59: And I don't know if Omachi is the perfect operating system for that….

00:05:04: You could make this argument.

00:05:06: something like NixOS is much better since it's based on that idea of easily configuring it in declarative ways.

00:05:18: You could create an entire episode just about NixOS, but you could argue that the template based or configuration-based approach of Nix OS is better for this vision.

00:05:34: My understanding just is that NixS is not very AI embracing But maybe it's a new Linux distribution thats created.

00:05:42: That fits that picture better.

00:05:48: But I like the fact that Omachi is kind of a pioneer when it comes to extensible operating systems and at out of the box, which is not necessarily the case for all other Linux distributions.

00:06:10: And of course if you're a linux diehard nobody's stopping from starting right on scratch and then finding that manually or with AI however you want!

00:06:22: I just think this vision...of having very extensible software where extensibility built in and a key part of its philosophy, that is the future.

00:06:40: Which does not mean surrounding software should be vibe coded or it doesn't need care especially for the operating system, I think should stay true.

00:06:58: Um i'm not talking about running on top of a vibe coded carelessly created operating system but I think being able to make an operating system truly your operating system in an easy way without spending months of diving through or reading through documentation and then wasting time on that... That is really interesting!

00:07:23: idea.

00:07:24: And that's the main takeaway for me from what I heard about Omachi thus far, and that is what i want to get out of my software in future!
